The 3 R's in Data Prep for Financial Operations

After many years of working with financial operations in multiple industries, one pattern has become very clear:
The vast majority of Financial Operations use cases fall into three core categories.
I refer to these as the 3 R’s:
Reconciliations & Operations
Reporting & Analysis
Risk, Regulatory & Compliance
Understanding these categories makes it much easier to identify where Data Preparation can deliver the most value within your organization.
Reconciliations & Operations
Reconciliations are any processes where two or more data sources need to be compared and validated. In some cases, this involves matching detailed transaction activity to summarized totals to ensure accuracy. A common example is reconciling a system of record to the financial general ledger.
These processes are typically performed on a regular cadence:
Daily
Weekly
Monthly
Quarterly
Annually
They may also occur on an ad hoc basis, such as during system migrations, upgrades, or strategic initiatives.
The “Operations” component refers to the actions that often accompany or follow reconciliations, such as:
Preparing journal entries
Updating systems of record
Maintaining lists of outstanding items
These activities are frequently interconnected with reconciliation processes, though they can also stand alone.
Examples
Financial Services
Reconciling corporate advance activity on a mortgage servicing platform against the general ledger
Healthcare Finance
Reconciling remittances (835s) against claims submitted (837s)
Manufacturing & Distribution
Reconciling sales activity in the ERP system against the financial general ledger
Reporting & Analysis
These use cases are more strategic in nature. They focus on combining and transforming data from multiple sources to create meaningful insights into business performance. A common example is month-end financial reporting, where data must be aggregated and structured for analysis and presentation.
These use cases help organizations:
Understand performance
Identify trends
Support decision-making
Improve financial operations
Examples
Financial Services
Credit and debit card portfolio KPIs (purchases, interchange, new accounts, active accounts)
Healthcare Finance
Accounts receivable by payer or financial class, denials management reporting
Manufacturing & Distribution
Sales and channel analytics, inventory and supply chain analysis
3. Risk, Regulatory & Compliance
The third category focuses on mitigating risk and ensuring compliance.
These use cases support:
Regulatory reporting
Audit readiness
Internal controls
Risk monitoring
Data plays a critical role in these processes, whether for validation, documentation, or reporting purposes.
Examples
Financial Services
Call reporting (NCUA, FFIEC), user access monitoring
Healthcare Finance
Medicare cost reporting, CMS hospital price transparency
Manufacturing & Distribution
Revenue compliance (ASC 606), sales and use tax filings
How These Categories Work Together
While these categories are helpful for understanding use cases, in practice they are often closely interconnected.
A single workflow may include all three:
A reconciliation is performed to identify discrepancies
A report is created to summarize outstanding items
Documentation is maintained to demonstrate risk mitigation and compliance
This interconnected nature is where Data Prep becomes especially powerful—enabling end-to-end processes rather than isolated tasks.
Final Thoughts
The 3 R’s—Reconciliations & Operations, Reporting & Analysis, and Risk, Regulatory & Compliance—represent the primary ways organizations use Data Prep. They are listed in descending order of volume, but not necessarily in importance. Each plays a critical role in managing financial operations effectively.
For organizations looking to expand their use of Data Prep, this framework provides a simple way to:
Identify new use cases
Prioritize opportunities
Maximize the value of the platform

If your organization wants to improve financial operations and you’re looking to expand beyond a single use case, understanding these categories is a great place to start. At Chrysalis Consulting Group (CCG), we help organizations identify and implement high-impact use cases across all three areas, converting manual processes into efficient, repeatable processes.
